Lt Gen Faiz Hameed in Military Custody for Court Martial Initiated in Top City Case: ISPR

Former intelligence chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed in Military Custody as the Pakistan Army initiates court martial proceedings against him, following a detailed inquiry into the Top City housing scheme scandal. This historic move marks the first time a former spymaster in the country has faced such action.

In a press release, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that the court of inquiry, ordered by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, revealed multiple violations of the Pakistan Army Act by Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd), both during his service and post-retirement. Consequently, disciplinary action under the Pakistan Army Act has commenced.

The inquiry committee, formed by the military in April, 2024 was tasked with investigating allegations of misuse of authority against the former ISI chief. Media reports suggest that this committee, headed by a serving major general, was established as part of the military’s self-accountability measures and in response to the Supreme Court’s directives.

The allegations against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) surfaced when the management of Top City, a private housing scheme, accused him of orchestrating a raid on the offices and residence of its owner, Moeez Khan. The Supreme Court had earlier directed the housing society’s owner to seek redress from relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Defence.

In a separate development, retired naib tehsildar Najaf Hameed, the brother of Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, was sent to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand in March 2024, related to allegations of corruption and property acquisitions worth billions of rupees.

Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) had sought early retirement in November 2022 after a career marked by several controversies. His name first gained prominence in 2017 when he played a key role in ending the Faizabad dharna by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan. He has since faced criticism from political figures, including PML-N leaders, for his alleged involvement in their convictions.

The Top City scandal has brought renewed scrutiny on the former ISI chief, as the military proceeds with the court martial and further investigations into the serious allegations against him.
