Punjab BHU’s Revamped as ‘Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics’ – Enhancing Rural Healthcare

The Punjab Chief Minister has taken a significant step to enhance healthcare by rebranding BHUs as Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics, aiming to improve medical services across the province. This initiative is set to address the healthcare challenges in underserved and remote areas, providing access to improved medical care.

Rebranding of BHUs as Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics

In a bid to improve healthcare access in rural regions, the Punjab government has decided to rebrand over 200 Basic Health Units (BHUs) as Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics. This decision, spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to modernize healthcare infrastructure in remote areas, ensuring quality medical services for all. These clinics will offer a variety of healthcare services, including maternal and child healthcare, basic diagnostic tests, and general medical treatments.

Performance Management Framework for Healthcare Staff

During a key meeting focused on revamping the health sector, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the establishment of a comprehensive performance management framework. The framework introduces Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare staff working at Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics. This new system aims to improve accountability and ensure that healthcare workers meet high standards in delivering patient care.

As part of the health reform agenda, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also approved the setup of cutting-edge cath labs in hospitals located in Mianwali, Jhang, Layyah, Attock, and Jhelum. These cath labs will provide specialized cardiac care, helping diagnose and treat heart conditions more effectively. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the healthcare system in these districts, providing residents with much-needed advanced medical services without traveling to larger cities.

Insulin for Type 1 Diabetic Children at Home

In an unprecedented move, the Chief Minister announced the Insulin for All project, which aims to deliver insulin directly to children suffering from Type 1 diabetes at their homes. Special cards will be issued to ensure that ailing children receive regular and uninterrupted insulin supplies. “A government-approved company will be responsible for the supply of insulin, maintaining cold chain and other standard operating procedures (SOPs),” Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized.

Chief Minister’s Vision for Healthcare Reforms

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for healthcare reform goes beyond the rebranding of health clinics and provision of insulin. The Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics initiative is one aspect of a larger effort to uplift healthcare standards across Punjab. Her administration is focused on improving medical infrastructure, providing specialized healthcare services, and ensuring that all citizens have access to essential medical care, especially in remote regions.

The high-level meeting where these decisions were made was attended by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Information and Culture Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari, Health Ministers Khawaja Salman Rafiq and Khawaja Imran Nazir, Health Advisor Dr. Azhar Kayani, and MPA Sania Ashiq. Their participation highlights the collaborative efforts of the government to bring meaningful reforms in Punjab’s healthcare sector.

With the launch of Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics, the Punjab government aims to further expand healthcare services by including more specialized treatment options and modern medical technologies in rural health centers. The clinics are expected to serve as a model for other provinces to improve their healthcare systems, benefiting millions of people across the country.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the “Clinics on Wheels” project during an event in Lahore, focusing on delivering healthcare directly to underserved communities. In her address, CM Maryam Nawaz acknowledged past challenges under Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz’s leadership but emphasized the importance of reorganization under new governance.

She shared that the mobile clinics will operate six days a week, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with special provisions for pregnant women. CM Maryam Nawaz also promised to increase medical personnel, prioritize local recruitment, establish cardiology centers in eight districts, and implement a free insulin program for diabetic patients.
