Rawalpindi is set to revolutionize public transport with Pakistan’s first-ever digital transportation system, designed to streamline and enhance the commuting experience. This ambitious project, a first of its kind in the country, aims to digitize the entire transport system in Rawalpindi, offering a modern and efficient solution for commuters.
According to a report, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) is spearheading the development of the software for this digital transportation system. The initiative includes the installation of a state-of-the-art control room and an e-tag system at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal, which will monitor and manage all vehicles within the terminal. The digital transportation system will collect comprehensive data on each vehicle, including registration numbers, owner details, vehicle color, fitness certificates, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and tracking information.
This innovative digital transportation system ensures that only vehicles meeting stringent safety and service standards can operate, thereby enhancing road and passenger safety. The project mirrors successful models from cities like Paris, London, and across the United States, positioning Pakistan at the forefront of modern transportation solutions. Upon its success, the project will be expanded to other cities across Punjab, further embedding the digital transportation system into the province’s infrastructure.
The completion of this pioneering project is expected to significantly improve the fitness levels of vehicles and provide a comfortable travel experience for citizens. Additionally, the digital transportation system will enable citizens to lodge complaints online against any public or government transport services, ensuring accountability and improving service quality.
