The Balochistan Assembly recently passed a significant resolution urging the provincial government to establish a medical college in Kharan, the divisional headquarters of Balochistan’s largest division, Rakhshan. Despite the passage of this important resolution, four other resolutions on Friday’s agenda could not be presented due to a lack of quorum.
The resolution was jointly moved by Finance, Mines, and Minerals Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani, along with Sadiq Sanjrani, Zabit Reki, and Ghulam Dastagir Badani. The session was chaired by Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai.
The resolution highlighted the acute shortage of medical education facilities in the Rakhshan division, which includes Kharan, Washuk, Chagai, and Noshki districts. Due to the absence of a local medical college, students from these areas are compelled to travel to Quetta or other regions of Pakistan to pursue their medical education. This situation places a considerable financial burden on families, many of whom struggle to cover the additional costs due to prevalent poverty.
Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani emphasized the substantial challenges faced by the over one million residents of the Rakhshan division. He particularly noted the impact on female students, who, due to inadequate local educational facilities, are often deprived of the opportunity to pursue higher education.
The resolution received broad support from various assembly members. Opposition leader Mir Younis Aziz Zehri expressed strong backing for the resolution, expressing hope that the establishment of a medical college in Kharan would occur within the current government’s tenure.
Provincial Minister for Revenue Mir Asim Kurd not only endorsed the resolution but also proposed the establishment of a medical college in Dera Murad Jamali. Furthermore, he called for the creation of a cadet college in the Kachhi district to enhance educational opportunities.
Minister for Agriculture Noor Muhammad Dummor, Deputy Speaker Ghazala Gola, and Engineer Zamrak Khan Piralizai also supported the resolution. Piralizai, representing the ANP, stressed the importance of establishing new educational institutions while also focusing on improving the quality and infrastructure of existing ones in the province.
Minister for Planning Mir Zahoor Buledi highlighted that the establishment of new educational institutions would not deplete provincial resources. Instead, he argued that it is the government’s responsibility to generate and allocate resources effectively to support such initiatives.
The resolution’s passage marks a crucial step towards addressing the educational disparities in Balochistan. As the provincial government considers the establishment of a medical college in Kharan, there is hope that this initiative will pave the way for improved educational opportunities and a brighter future for the youth of the Rakhshan division.
