The Karachi Buildings Parking Capacity Survey has uncovered that 31 buildings across the city have the potential to provide parking for approximately 5,000 vehicles. This discovery comes from a recent survey commissioned by Karachi’s Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, aimed at alleviating the city’s traffic congestion.
According to the SBCA report, these buildings, which include commercial and trade centers, are being used improperly. The findings show that the designated parking areas of at least 20 buildings are being repurposed as shops, warehouses, and other commercial establishments. Additionally, three buildings have converted their parking spaces into mosques, and ten others have been turned into retail outlets.
The report also highlights that the parking areas of three buildings are closed due to their dilapidated state. In the southern district of Karachi, seven buildings are reported to be misusing their parking facilities, while violations have been noted in the old city area from MA Jinnah Road to Abdullah Haroon Road. Furthermore, parking area misuse has been documented in eight buildings in District East and three buildings in the central district.
Addressing these violations and utilizing these parking spaces for their intended purpose could significantly ease traffic congestion and improve parking convenience for citizens
