Nawaz Sharif Political Comeback: Steps Up to Challenge Imran Khan Popularity

Amid the ongoing turmoil in Pakistan’s political landscape, Nawaz Sharif political comeback as PML-N President is significant. Sources inform that his renewed political activity aims primarily to “counter the popularity of jailed PTI supremo Imran Khan.”

According to a minister’s statement, “It has been decided that the elder Nawaz Sharif will initially tour various regions of the country to reactivate the party.” Nawaz Sharif, who has been residing mostly in the Murree hill station, will start his journey in Balochistan, followed by visits to Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Meetings are also scheduled in Punjab to further galvanize support.

During last month’s PML-N senior leadership meeting in Lahore, a strategic plan was presented to reorganize and reactivate the party at the grassroots level. This initiative will be personally overseen by Nawaz Sharif, who emphasizes the importance of loyal party workers and leaders in filling vacant positions. In the subsequent phase, he plans to hold rallies nationwide as part of his political comeback.

Despite perceptions that his role has diminished to a ceremonial level following Shehbaz Sharif’s government formation, calls for Nawaz Sharif’s involvement in party affairs have intensified. Senior leaders, including his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, have reportedly urged him to re-enter the political fray.

A party insider stated, “The current political situation demands that Nawaz Sharif be visibly active to counter the popularity of incarcerated PTI supremo Imran Khan.” He expressed concern about the “limited space” available for politicians in the current scenario and emphasized the need for Sharif’s involvement to curb the influence of non-democratic forces.

Recently, Nawaz Sharif instructed both his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, and daughter Maryam Nawaz to include the party in critical decision-making processes. In a recent party meeting, he sought suggestions to strengthen the party’s influence in government affairs, advocating for administrative decisions to be made in consultation with party members. PML-N Punjab President and Prime Minister’s adviser Rana Sanaullah remarked, “There has been an impression that the government’s decision-making is influenced by bureaucratic inputs, which need to be replaced with political ones”.
