Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced today his decision to step down from his role as the President of the PML-N, declaring it’s time for his brother, Nawaz Sharif to reclaim his rightful position as the party president.
Nawaz Sharif was ousted from the party’s presidency in 2018 following a ruling by the Supreme Court, which stated that individuals disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution couldn’t hold leadership positions in political parties.
This verdict stemmed from 17 petitions challenging the controversial Elections Act 2017, hurriedly passed in parliament to facilitate Nawaz Sharif’s return as the PML-N’s head of the party.
Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification traces back to the Panama Papers case, where the Supreme Court found him unfit for public office due to dishonesty and lack of truthfulness, as mandated by Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.
In a letter posted today by PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb, PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed his reflections on the resilience shown by the party under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership during challenging times.
Acknowledging the trust bestowed upon him by Nawaz Sharif, PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted his dedication to the role of party president. However, recent legal developments, including Nawaz Sharif’s relief in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, led PM Shehbaz Sharif to believe it’s time for Nawaz Sharif to reassume leadership.
PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized his commitment to the party’s principles as he tendered his resignation, pledging unwavering loyalty to serve under Nawaz Sharif’s guidance.
