World Risk Index Report 2024: Pakistan Among Highest Conflict & Disaster Risk Countries

According to the World Risk Index report 2024  released, Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to conflict and disaster, ranking among the top 15 countries facing the highest disaster risks. This year, Pakistan has dropped from the top 10, overtaken by Russia, while China has been displaced in the rankings. Countries like Mexico and Colombia have also shifted positions in the index.

The World Risk Index 2024 highlights that Pakistan ranks third in conflict exposure, trailing behind Colombia and Brazil. The list of countries most at risk from disasters includes the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and others, with Pakistan featuring prominently due to its high vulnerability.

This year’s report focuses on the escalating complexities of crises, emphasizing the interconnectedness of disaster risk management. Published by Germany’s Ruhr University Bochum—Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV), the World Risk Index 2024 indicates that extreme weather events, ongoing conflicts, and pandemics are increasingly overlapping, exacerbating global crises.

In 2024, the highest risk hotspots remain concentrated in the Americas and Asia, with eight of the top ten countries located in these regions. As climate change continues to escalate the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, the World Risk Index 2024 warns that vulnerable countries, particularly those with climate-sensitive exposure, will face growing threats in the future.

Disasters caused by natural events can ignite or intensify armed conflicts, especially in nations grappling with poverty, ethnic exclusion, or fragile governance. The report underscores the severe global water crisis, revealing how climate change negatively impacts agriculture, natural resources, and human livelihoods.
