Pakistani Drama ‘Humsafar’ to Premiere in India As Indo Pak Peace Initiative

An Indian stage production of the iconic Pakistani drama Humsafar is reportedly in the works as part of an initiative to promote Indo-Pak peace, confirmed theatre and film actor Imran Zahid to Indian media. This announcement follows recent decisions by Indian courts, signaling a step towards cultural diplomacy between the two countries.

Last year, the Bombay High Court made a landmark ruling dismissing a petition that sought to ban Indian citizens and organizations from collaborating with Pakistani artists. The court deemed the petition a “retrograde step in promoting cultural harmony, unity, and peace.” After the Bombay High Court’s decision, the petitioner appealed to the Indian Supreme Court, which also rejected the plea, advising against a narrow-minded approach to such cultural exchanges.

The timing of Humsafar’s stage adaptation is significant, as it comes after the 2019 ban imposed by the All Indian Cine Workers Association on Pakistani artists in the aftermath of the Pulwama attacks. Imran Zahid revealed discussions, that creators of Humsafar, are underway to secure the stage adaptation rights. The lead actors of the Humsafar drama, Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, became global sensations after the show’s original release in 2011.

According to reports by Times Now, both parties have agreed in principle to move forward with the stage adaptation of Humsafar. The production will be free of charge, with no monetary gain, as a gesture of goodwill promoting Indo-Pak peace. Imran Zahid also mentioned the involvement Sultana Siddiqui in these discussions, further highlighting the cultural significance of the initiative.
