The government of Punjab has announced a new electricity tarrif in Punjab that will significantly impact lower and middle-class consumers beginning 1 October 2024. The previous subsidy package, which provided relief for customers using up to 200 units, is set to expire at the end of this month. This temporary measure, which was in effect for just three months, coincided with the peak demand period for electricity.
As of 30 September 2024, the existing electricity tariff will come to an end, leading to notable increases in electricity bills for many households. Non-protected consumers who use up to 100 units will see their rates rise to Rs 23.59 per unit. Meanwhile, those consuming between 101 and 200 units will experience an increase of Rs 7.12, bringing their new rate to Rs 30.07 per unit.
For protected consumers, the adjustments will also be significant. The tariff for those using 1 to 100 units will increase by Rs 3.95, making the new rate Rs 11.69 per unit. For consumers in the 101 to 200 units range, the increase will be Rs 4.10, resulting in a new rate of Rs 14.16 per unit.

This revised tariff structure, encapsulated in the new electricity tariff in Punjab, is expected to have widespread repercussions as the government phases out temporary relief measures that were initially implemented to combat rising energy costs and ongoing economic challenges. In a previous development, the government allocated Rs 50 billion in subsidies to cushion the blow from these upcoming increases.
