Pakistan Wheat Production 2024-25 Lower than Expected

Pakistan wheat production for Rabi Season 2024-25 is estimated at 28.42 million tons from 9.1 million hectares, which falls short of the 33.58 million tons from 10.368 million hectares target. This is 10 percent lower than last year’s production.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired the meeting of the FCA (Federal Committee on Agriculture). During the meeting it was discovered that while wheat production has lowered, other crops like onion, potato and tomato have given positive trends.

Onion production is predicted to reach 2.7 million tons, showing an increase of 15.7 percent for the 2024-25 season, despite a reduction of 17.3 percent in the cultivated area. Tomato and potato production has shown growth as well, with an increase of 8.8 percent in both crops, from 53,000 hectares to 654,000 tons.

The production target of the Kharif season for 2025-26  has been set by the FCA. It includes cotton with the target of 10.18 million bales from 2.2 million hectares, sugarcane at 80.3 million tons from 1.1 million hectares and maize at 9.7 million tons from 1.5 million hectares. Additionally, the production of rice is set at 9.17 million tons from over 3 million hectares.

The PMD (Pakistan Meteorological Department) reported a significant reduction in rainfall, with precipitation 39 percent below average recorded from January to April 2025 and precipitation in April 2025 is below 60 percent, particularly in southern regions such as Balochistan and Sindh. The PMD also predicted above-normal precipitation from May 2025 to July 2025, with above-normal temperatures remaining in most parts of the country, except in July 2025.

The meeting also discussed the status of rabi crops and set production targets for the future. It included representative from different provincial agriculture departments, the PMD and other key agricultural bodies.
