The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has launched a Cash Assistance Programme aimed at providing financial support to vulnerable households in Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Dadu. This Cash Assistance Programme is designed to help communities cope with adverse climatic conditions, protect their livestock, and respond to the long-standing drought and rising temperatures exacerbated by El Niño.
In total, the FAO has distributed cash through its Cash Assistance Programme in two instalments to 2,836 beneficiaries across these three districts. Specifically, 1,836 households received Rs 40,000 each, while 1,000 subsistence herder households benefited from the Cash Assistance Programme, receiving Rs 50,000 each, which included an additional Rs 10,000 for animal feed support.
The Cash Assistance Programme serves dual purposes: it provides immediate relief for essential needs while also mitigating the impacts of severe dry periods and high temperatures on livelihoods. Through this two-tranche distribution, the FAO is reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the resilience of agricultural communities facing climate-related challenges. The initiative has received support from the European Union’s directorate for humanitarian aid operations.
