In a groundbreaking move for athletics in the region, Pakistan will host the South Asian Cross Country Athletics Championship 2024 for the very first time. Scheduled for November 24 in Islamabad, this prestigious event is set to feature elite athletes from seven South Asian nations, including India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
The announcement was made by officials from the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP), who confirmed that the government has granted the necessary clearance for all participating teams, ensuring seamless international participation, including India’s team.
“This is a significant event for Pakistan’s sporting landscape,” stated an AFP official. The Pakistan Sports Board has also issued the required No Objection Certificate (NOC), facilitating the smooth execution of the championship.
The Cross Country Athletics Championship 2024 is not just a race; it’s a celebration of endurance and skill. Cross country running is a long-distance sport where individuals and teams compete across challenging natural terrains.
The courses typically range from 3 to 12 kilometers and include varied surfaces like grass, dirt, and gravel, along with natural obstacles such as hills and woodlands. Athletes will be evaluated based on their individual performance as well as a team-based points system, adding to the competitive spirit of this exciting championship.
