Benazir Hari Card Issuance Project Launched to Support Sindh Farmers

In a significant move to aid the agricultural sector, the Sindh government has announced its plans to distribute Benazir Hari Cards to farmers through Sindh Bank. This initiative, reported on 8 October2024, aims to enhance support for farmers across the province, ensuring they have access to essential resources and financial assistance.

A meeting chaired by Sindh Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar provided updates on the issuance of Benazir Hari Cards, highlighting the government’s commitment to empowering the farming community. An agreement between the Sindh government and Sindh Bank has been established to facilitate the distribution of these cards, which are set to play a crucial role in supporting local agriculture.

Minister Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar announced that a launch ceremony for the Benazir Hari Cards will be organized soon. In the initial phase, 298,000 registered farmers in Sindh will be eligible to receive these cards, specifically targeting those who own up to 25 acres of land. This initiative underscores the government’s focus on smaller landholders, who often face significant challenges in accessing resources.

Farmers who receive the Benazir Hari Cards will benefit from subsidies on essential agricultural inputs, including bardana (grain bags), seeds, fertilizers, urea, and pesticides. Additionally, these cards will offer financial assistance during natural disasters, further strengthening support for the farming community in times of need.

Minister Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar also indicated that the government plans to register an additional 1.4 million farmers in Sindh shortly. This effort emphasizes the Sindh government’s commitment to alleviating the challenges faced by farmers through the Kisan (Farmer) Card initiative, with Sindh Bank designated to produce the Benazir Hari Cards.

Project Director Liaquat Ali Bhutto revealed that the Sindh government has allocated PKR 8 billion for the successful implementation of the Benazir Hari Card initiative. This significant investment underscores the government’s dedication to fostering growth and resilience in the agricultural sector of the province.
