Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched the Apni Chat Apna Ghar Interest Free Housing Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing loans without interest to low-income families across the province. This ambitious program is designed to make homeownership a reality for thousands of deserving individuals in both urban and rural areas of Punjab.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore today, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the significance of homeownership, stressing that while many may take having a roof over their heads for granted, those without a home understand its profound value. “There’s no place like home,” she remarked, underscoring the emotional and practical importance of this initiative.
The Apni Chat Apna Ghar scheme is set to provide interest-free loans of up to Rs. 1.5 million to individuals who own 1 to 5 marlas of land in urban areas, or 1 to 10 marlas in rural regions. The Punjab government has carefully designed the repayment plan to start after a three-month grace period, with monthly installments capped at Rs. 14,000/-, making it easier for beneficiaries to manage the financial commitment.
During her address, the Chief Minister reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to alleviating financial hardships for Punjab residents. This comes on the heels of a recent announcement by Nawaz Sharif for reducing electricity bills by Rs. 14 per unit for consumers using between 200 and 500 units per month—a subsidy that will be available in August and September. However, this relief measure has sparked discontent among coalition allies, particularly within the PPP-led Sindh government, as it is exclusive to Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz also elaborated on the housing scheme’s structure, emphasizing that the loans would be repaid over a seven-year period with no hidden charges. Importantly, the scheme is designed without involving Banks, to avoid any additional financial burdens on the beneficiaries. “We wanted to ensure transparency and simplicity in this process,” she explained.
Applications for the scheme can be submitted through online portal, ‘link given below in HOW to Apply For’ section and helpline 080009100 can be used to seek general assistance. The Chief Minister assured that the program would soon expand to cover all major cities in Punjab, with the ultimate goal of providing every deserving family with a home.
The new homes will include two bedrooms, a TV lounge, a bathroom, and a kitchen, ensuring that even families with limited means can live with dignity. Maryam Nawaz reiterated her government’s resolve to extend this housing scheme across the province within the next five years, stating, “Even the poor have self-respect, and we need to get this right because you only build a house once.”
This initiative is a key part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to support low-income families, following closely on the heels of the recent electricity subsidy. Under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz, the government continues to focus on delivering tangible relief and improving the quality of life for the people of Punjab.
