Internet Disruptions and Firewall Issue Raised By PTI in National Assembly

In a recent National Assembly session, discussions centered around significant Internet Disruptions in Pakistan, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Rai Hasan Nawaz Kharl accusing the government of fearing the youth, which he claims has led to the proposed implementation of a firewall. Rai Hasan Nawaz Kharl’s remarks highlighted the ongoing frustrations regarding Internet Disruptions impacting connectivity across the nation.

In response, Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar refrained from confirming any plans for a firewall but emphasized that measures are being taken to enhance internet services. “The government aims to enhance the entire IT system,” Azam Nazeer Tarar stated. He assured the assembly that the ongoing Internet Disruptions would be addressed within the next five to six days.

Azam Nazeer Tarar further mentioned that the Minister for IT would provide a comprehensive update on the situation, though he had to return to Lahore due to his mother’s illness. When questioned about the challenges of laying fibre optic networks, Azam Nazeer Tarar acknowledged the difficulties faced but expressed optimism for improvements.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has stepped in to assist companies and freelancers impacted by the Internet Disruptions by offering registered VPN services.

During the session, the Ministry of Information Technology disclosed the details of VPN registrations with the PTA, revealing that 20,500 VPNs are registered for 1,422 companies. This includes 1,286 VPNs designated for companies, 136 for freelancers, and others affiliated with P@SHA.

According to the documents presented, the 1,286 VPNs serve 19,840 users, while 136 licenses cover 180 VPNs. Additionally, 417 VPNs registered under P@SHA have received PTA recognition.

In a written response, the Ministry of IT confirmed that the PTA is collaborating with the Ministry of IT and other stakeholders on VPN registration and has extended VPN facilities to those affected by the Internet Disruptions.
