In a significant political development, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has announced Jaffar Khan Mandokhail as the new Governor of Balochistan. This appointment comes as part of a coalition agreement with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), following a series of discussions aimed at strengthening governance in the region.

Mandokhail’s nomination was confirmed on Friday, positioning him as a key figure in the provincial leadership. As the current president of the PML-N’s provincial chapter in Balochistan, Mandokhail expressed his gratitude towards Nawaz Sharif, the party’s supremo, for this prestigious nomination. Speaking to Geo News, Mandokhail stated, “I will serve the country and the nation as a governor and will play the role of a bridge between the province and the Centre.”
He will be replacing Abdul Wali Kakar, the outgoing governor from the Balochistan National Party (BNP), who has held the position since March 2023.
Background and Political Career of Jaffar Khan Mandokhail
Born on December 26, 1956, in Quetta, Jaffar Khan Mandokhail has a long-standing history in politics, which began in 1974 through student activism. His academic credentials include matriculation from St Francis Grammar School followed by a master’s degree from Balochistan University.
Mandokhail first stepped into the electoral arena in 1988, representing the Pakistan Muslim League Quaid’s (PML-Q) in Zhob for a provincial seat. Over the years, he has held multiple key positions including education minister, finance minister, and home minister in different tenures spanning from 1990 to 1999. Although he faced defeats in the 2018 and 2024 elections, his political experience is extensive, with assignments across various important departments
PPP’s Strategic Moves in Regional Governance
In related developments, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also made significant appointments, naming Sardar Saleem Haider Khan and Faisal Karim Kundi as governors for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, respectively. This move underscores PPP’s strategic positioning in Pakistan’s broader political landscape, aligning with their coalition commitments with PML-N.
Sardar Saleem, a seasoned politician from Attock district of Punjab and a former federal minister, will replace Governor Baligh Ur Rehman, marking a new chapter in Punjab’s governance under the coalition’s agreed terms.
