The Robotic Surgery at JPMC in Karachi has completed 300 successful operations in its first year, marking a major milestone in medical advancement. According to Professor Shahid Rasool, Executive Director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), robotic surgery was launched on October 4, 2023.
The state-of-the-art technology has been utilized in various departments, including:
Urology Department
In the urology department, robotic surgery has been employed to perform intricate procedures such as prostate cancer surgeries, kidney stone removals, and bladder cancer treatments. These surgeries have resulted in quicker patient recovery and reduced complications.
General Surgery
The general surgery department has utilized robotic surgery at JPMC for procedures like sleeve gastrectomy, hernia repairs, and colon cancer surgeries. The advanced robotic system has enabled surgeons to perform these operations with minimal incisions, lowering blood loss and speeding up recovery.
Gynecology Department
In the gynecology department, robotic surgery has revolutionized procedures such as hysterectomies and ovarian cyst removals. The precision of robotic surgery has significantly improved patient outcomes, with fewer complications and faster healing times.
Advantages of Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery offers multiple benefits, including the ability to rotate surgical instruments 360 degrees, far surpassing the 180-degree range of the human wrist. This leads to greater precision, less blood loss, and faster recovery for patients. Professor Shahid Rasool also emphasized that no deaths were reported during these procedures, underscoring the safety and effectiveness of this innovative technology.
