SUPARCO Gilgit Baltistan: First Space and Research Center Established in GB

SUPARCO Gilgit Baltistan is set to make history with the inauguration of the Space Applications and Research Center (SPARC-GB) in the region on 2 October 2024. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) is leading this pioneering initiative, which will focus on advancing space and environmental research in Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to an official source, the event will bring together distinguished scientists, environmental experts, and students, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward space technology and environmental sustainability. Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Gulbar Khan, will be the chief guest at the ceremony.

SUPARCO Gilgit-Baltistan is part of the organization’s broader efforts to apply space technology and environmental monitoring across Pakistan. Given Gilgit-Baltistan’s unique geographical challenges, including susceptibility to climate change and natural hazards, the SPARC-GB center will play a crucial role in addressing these pressing issues.

The center will focus on glacier monitoring, climate change mitigation, and disaster management, utilizing cutting-edge space-based research. Additionally, SPARC-GB will explore glacier dynamics, natural hazards, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management to support the region’s environmental needs.

Through collaboration with scientists, students, and experts, SPARC-GB is poised to become a leading institution in tackling the critical environmental challenges faced by Gilgit-Baltistan. SUPARCO Gilgit-Baltistan’s efforts will significantly contribute to improving the understanding and management of the region’s environmental vulnerabilities.
