Govt Commenced Privatization of 3 Electricity Distribution Companies

The govt has officially commenced the privatization of 3 electricity distribution companies (DISCOS), following a meeting co-chaired by Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari.

The Privatisation Commission has now invited technical and financial proposals to appoint financial advisers for private sector involvement in the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).

During the meeting, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan highlighted that the divestment of these Discos will occur in multiple phases, emphasizing the importance of maintaining transparency and addressing technical considerations throughout the process. Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari urged that essential issues for the privatisation of power firms be resolved promptly and that relevant details and data be provided to interested parties.

Minister Abdul Aleem Khan also stressed the need to expedite the privatisation process wherever feasible. Officials, including the privatisation secretary, reported that a comprehensive schedule for the privatisation of these Discos has been established, with final approval pending from the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation and the federal government. Key topics discussed included the appointment of a financial adviser, market assessments, restructuring, and other critical matters.
