Pig Butchering Scam: Fraudulent Trading Apps Exploit Google Play and Apple Users

The Pig Butchering Scam is a growing concern, with numerous fraudulent apps infiltrating both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. These deceptive trading applications lure victims by making them believe they are receiving high returns on their investments through fabricated profit numbers. This manipulation leads investors into a web of lies, often resulting in significant financial losses.

Scammers employ sophisticated social engineering tactics to prevent users from withdrawing their pseudo profits. Instead, they continuously encourage victims to invest more and more money, effectively “butchering” their finances over time.

According to a recent report from BleepingComputer, citing cybersecurity firm Group-IB, these malicious trading apps, which belong to the Pig Butchering Scam category, were first spotted earlier this year in May 2024.

These fraudulent apps are built using the UniApp framework and can disguise themselves as legitimate trading platforms. Some of the most notorious apps that have deceived unsuspecting users include SBI-INT (iOS), Finans Insights (Android), and Finans Trader6 (Android).

These fraudulent trading apps have found their way into both Android and Apple’s App Store, making it increasingly difficult for users to differentiate between legitimate and fake applications.

Cybersecurity experts have noted that these apps can impersonate well-known cryptocurrency and trading platforms, often using names that sound familiar and trustworthy to potential investors.

Some of these fraudulent apps present themselves as tools for “algebraic mathematical formulas and 3D graphic volume area calculations” on iOS, while on Android, they masquerade as “financial news feed aggregators.”

Once downloaded, they redirect users to counterfeit trading platforms that require invitation codes for access. In an insidious twist, some scammers even engage their victims through dating apps to build trust and further exploit them.

While many of these apps have now been removed from official app stores, they had already been downloaded by thousands before being detected. Reports indicate that the scammers are now migrating to phishing websites.
