PM Shehbaz Calls for Global Justice at UNGA, emphasizing the urgent need for action, particularly regarding the ongoing crises in Gaza and Kashmir. Addressing the plenary meeting for the UN General Debate at the 79th session of the the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister declared that Pakistan would respond decisively to Indian aggression, highlighting the escalating belligerence of the Modi-led government.
A Call to Action on Global Issues
During his 21-minute speech, PM Shehbaz Sharif touched on various critical issues, including the conflicts in Palestine and Kashmir, the war in Ukraine, climate change, and the rising poverty and debt burdens exacerbated by these global challenges. “It is an honor for me to address the United Nations General Assembly for the second time as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, a nation committed to the principles of the UN Charter,” he stated.
The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to global peace, recalling the words of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1947: “We stand by the United Nations Charter, and we will gladly make our full contribution to the peace and prosperity of the world.”
Gaza and Kashmir: Two Faces of Oppression
Highlighting the catastrophic situation in Gaza, PM Shehbaz Sharif described the Israeli military actions as “genocidal.” He called it a systematic slaughter of innocent civilians, stating, “The blood of Gaza’s children stains not only the hands of the oppressors but also those complicit in prolonging this cruel conflict.” He urged immediate action to halt the bloodshed and called for the UN to advocate for a two-state solution to ensure a viable and sovereign State of Palestine.
The Prime Minister also drew parallels between the plight of Palestinians and the struggle of the people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He lamented that the Kashmiri people have endured a century of oppression in their quest for freedom and self-determination. “India has resiled from its commitments to implement the Security Council resolutions on the Kashmir dispute, which mandate a plebiscite for Kashmiris to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination,” he noted.
He further criticized the unilateral measures taken by India since August 5, 2019, which he termed as an attempt at a “Final Solution” for the region. “Nine hundred thousand Indian troops terrorize the people of occupied Kashmir with draconian measures,” he asserted, emphasizing that such oppressive tactics have historically failed in suppressing the spirit of freedom.
Call for Dialogue and Justice
For a lasting peace, PM Shehbaz Sharif urged India to reverse its illegal actions and engage in dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. He emphasized, “Let me state, in no uncertain terms that Pakistan will respond most decisively to any Indian aggression.”
In closing, the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his call for global justice at the UNGA, highlighting that the international community must act decisively to address these grave injustices.
