PTI Calls for Immediate Notification of Next Supreme Court Chief Justice

Imran Khan, the founder of PTI Calls for Immediate Notification of Next Supreme Court Chief Justice as the party emphasizes the need for clarity on the matter. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan emphasized the party’s stance during a media briefing, asserting that any extension of the current CJP’s term is unacceptable.

This demand follows Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar’s statement from last month, where he clarified that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa had no interest in extending his term. On July 13, 2024 during an interview Azam Nazeer Tarar revealed that CJP Isa had expressed disinterest in an extension, despite circulating rumors.

The current Chief Justice, who assumed office on September 17, 2023, after being notified on June 21, 2023, is set to retire on October 25, 2024.

In addition to the demand for a new CJP notification, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan voiced concerns about the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) ruling on the recount of votes in National Assembly constituencies NA-154, NA-81, and NA-79. This ruling provided relief to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) by overturning the Lahore High Court’s decision to nullify the recount.

Gohar Ali Khan criticized the Supreme Court’s verdict, stating, “The decision to reverse the elected MNAs contradicts justice.” He announced that PTI plans to file a review petition against the ruling, alleging it to be part of a broader conspiracy against the party.

“Previous attempts to undermine PTI included efforts to strip the party of its election symbol and reserved seats,” Gohar Ali Khan added. “Now, there is another attempt to undermine PTI’s victories through this recount.”

The PTI continues to challenge these decisions, asserting that they are part of ongoing efforts to disadvantage the party.
