Pakistani weightlifter Nooh Dastgir Butt has made a remarkable international debut at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship 2024, held in South Africa, where he clinched gold in the squat event, as reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan. This triumph marks Butt’s first appearance in powerlifting, making him Pakistan’s inaugural gold medalist in this sport.

The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship 2024 saw the Pride of Performance Award recipient and Commonwealth Games gold medalist lifts an impressive 370 kilograms at Sun City. Following his victory, Butt took to Instagram to celebrate his achievement, stating, “Won gold medal at Commonwealth Classic Powerlifting Championships 2024. Stop me if you can; this Butt is not going to stop.” He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his supporters.

Looking ahead, Butt is set to compete in the bench press and deadlift categories, where he aims to secure two additional gold medals and potentially claim the overall championship title in the 120kg+ weight category. His ambition is to bring home a total of four gold medals from the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship 2024.

Hailing from Gujranwala, renowned as Pakistan’s largest nursery of weightlifters and wrestlers, Butt began his weightlifting journey at the tender age of 11. By the time he turned 18, he was already making waves on the international stage. Notably, at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he set new records in the snatch, clean-and-jerk, and total categories. He attributes his success to his father, stating, “The credit for that goes to my father, who spent all these years training me.”

With his sights set high, Nooh Dastgir Butt is not just competing for medals; he’s on a mission to elevate Pakistan’s presence in the world of powerlifting, starting with his stellar performance at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship 2024.
