As per recent Government Initiative, Pakistan to set up National Cyber Security Authority by next year 2025 is aiming to enhance surveillance and protect against data breaches and cyberattacks targeting national institutions. This strategic move underscores the country’s commitment to bolstering its digital defenses.
During the ‘InfoSec 2024’ conference, Dr. Haider Abbas, Director General of the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT), announced plans to upgrade the team into the National Cyber Security Authority of Pakistan by next year 2025. This transition marks a significant step in fortifying the nation’s cybersecurity Agency infrastructure.
Key institutions in Pakistan, including the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), K-Electric, and several banks, have suffered recent data breaches. An app-based transportation company also fell victim to cyberattacks, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures.
Dr. Haider Abbas revealed that CERT is establishing a lab to ensure organizations deploy robust security hardware and software. This initiative will eventually mandate lab certification by July 1, 2028, marking a critical deadline for compliance.
Faiz Ahmad Shuja, founder of Rewterz, noted that numerous Pakistani organizations, including state-owned entities, have experienced data breaches, primarily from foreign attackers. India is cited as a significant source of these threats.
Shoukat Bizinjo, Additional Director of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), highlighted the financial sector’s vulnerability, referencing an IMF study reporting 20,000 cyber-attacks over two decades, resulting in a $20 billion loss globally, with $12 billion impacting the financial sector alone. He emphasized the need for upcoming digital banks in Pakistan to prioritize cybersecurity Agency.
Muhammad Zohaib Khan, Chairman of P@SHA, reported that Pakistan’s actual IT exports are significantly higher, ranging between $6-7 billion in FY24. This growth reflects the country’s expanding role in the global digital economy.
By establishing the National Cybersecurity Agency, Pakistan is taking a proactive stance to safeguard its digital landscape, ensuring a secure environment for both public and private sectors.
