Pakistani Mountaineer Murad Sadpara Missing After Broad Peak Success

Pakistani Mountaineer Murad Sadpara Missing after successfully summiting Broad Peak. Following his record-breaking climb, Murad Sadpara reportedly fell after reaching the summit, and contact with him has since been lost.

Deputy Commissioner of Shigar, Waliullah Falahi, confirmed the incident, stating that Army Aviation has been contacted to assist in the search and rescue operation. Fellow climber Naila Kiani has appealed on social media for the Pakistan Army to dispatch a rescue team from Skardu to the Broad Peak crampon point to ensure Murad Sadpara’s safe return.

Murad Sadpara was recently involved in a mission to recover the body of a porter who perished a year ago on K2. The disappearance highlights the risks associated with high-altitude climbing, even on Broad Peak, considered one of the “safer” eight-thousanders, standing at 8,047 meters (26,555 feet).

Abid Sadpara, another mountaineer, has urged the public to pray for Murad Sadpara’s safe return and expressed frustration over the lack of response to their calls for assistance.

Pakistan, home to five of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2 and Nanga Parbat, continues to attract climbers from around the globe. In 2023, over 8,900 foreign climbers visited the remote Gilgit-Baltistan region during the summer climbing season, which runs from early June to late August, 2024.
