The Punjab Power Subsidy, a recent initiative by the Punjab government to provide financial relief to power consumers, has become a point of contention between the province’s major political allies. PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto expressed strong reservations, labeling the Punjab Power Subsidy as “unsustainable” during a speech. Drawing parallels with a previous petrol subsidy by the PTI government, Bilawal Bhutto warned that while the Punjab Power Subsidy might offer short-term relief, it could result in long-term challenges.
Speaking at the Chief Minister’s House during the launch of a solar home systems project, Bilawal Bhutto acknowledged the potential benefits of the Punjab Power Subsidy in reducing electricity costs. However, he voiced concerns that the Punjab Power Subsidy might lead to prolonged hardships, much like the petrol price reduction by the previous government, which had lasting negative impacts.
Bilawal Bhutto emphasized the importance of sustainable energy solutions over temporary measures like the Punjab Power Subsidy. He urged Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to engage with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to explore better options for electricity relief in Sindh, suggesting that renewable energy might be a more viable alternative. The Punjab Power Subsidy, he argued, should be evaluated in the context of long-term sustainability and public interest.

The event also marked the inauguration of a solar energy project aimed at providing relief to those affected by high electricity costs and loadshedding. This project aligns with PPP’s manifesto and reflects their commitment to supporting lower-income families. Bilawal Bhutto noted that although the solar energy initiative was initially met with skepticism, it has now gained nationwide recognition as a necessary step toward providing affordable electricity to the poor.
