Social Apathy at Its Worst: Woman Raped on Footpath While No One Intervenes

A disturbing incident has emerged from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, where a rag picker woman raped on footpath after being coerced into consuming alcohol. The alleged crime, which occurred in the Agar Naka area, has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and law enforcement in the state.

According to police reports, the woman filed a complaint following the attack, leading to the swift arrest of the accused, identified as Lokesh. The incident has ignited a fierce political debate, particularly between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party. The Congress has pointed to the incident as evidence of the “deteriorating law and order” situation in the state, emphasizing that it took place in the constituency of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

Shocking video footage of the woman being raped on footpath, filmed by bystanders, has further fueled the outrage. While police officials confirmed that multiple passersby recorded the assault, none intervened to help the victim. City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Om Prakash Mishra stated that the victim approached the police station, leading to an immediate investigation and FIR registration.

Lokesh was arrested within two hours of the complaint, during which he confessed to the crime. The police have also apprehended Mohammad Salim, an auto rickshaw driver, who allegedly filmed the incident. Authorities are investigating his motives for recording rather than reporting the crime.

Jitu Patwari, the State Congress President, criticized the BJP for its perceived hypocrisy, pointing out that while the ruling party protests against similar incidents elsewhere, a woman was raped on a footpath in the Chief Minister’s own constituency. He highlighted that on average, 18 women face rape or harassment daily in Madhya Pradesh, questioning the silence of top officials, including CM Mohan Yadav and PM Narendra Modi.

In response, BJP State President VD Sharma accused the Congress party of politicizing the incident, asserting that the BJP government has implemented strict laws, including the death penalty for such crimes. He assured that the government would ensure stringent action against the accused.
