Utility Stores to Be Restructured, No Shut Down: Minister Rana Tanveer

As protests erupted across the country by employees of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC), Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain clarified that Utility Stores are not being closed, but rather “restructured” to better serve the public. He emphasized that the government’s plan is to revamp Utility Stores to ensure that only deserving individuals benefit from subsidies on essential food items and groceries.

Speaking at the 9th Colour and Chem Expo at the Lahore International Expo Centre, Rana Tanveer Hussain refuted claims of Utility Stores shutting down, stating, “The idea that Utility Stores are being closed is inaccurate. We are restructuring the USC to target subsidies more effectively.”

Protests in Muzaffargarh saw USC employees rally against the potential closure, warning of widespread unemployment if the decision is not reversed. Similar protests were reported in Jalalpur Pirwala, Jahanian, and Chishtian.

This clarification follows the federal government’s recent announcement of exploring alternatives to Utility Stores, including potential cash transfers, as part of a broader strategy to streamline federal institutions. The USC, which operates over 4,000 stores nationwide, has been listed for potential privatization.

During a Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production meeting, it was discussed that the future of Utility Stores is still under review by the cabinet, with a final decision expected soon.
