Apple has officially launched iPhone Software Update IOS 18, now available for eligible iPhones. You can easily download it for free via the Software Update settings. This update brings new features and enhancements, but some iPhones will not be able to support the latest iOS version.
If you plan to get your hands on the upcoming iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro, both set to release on September 20, they will come pre-installed with iPhone Software Update IOS 18. However, older iPhone models might not support the full range of features, especially the new “Apple Intelligence” enhancements.
Apple’s strategy of gradually phasing out older models continues with iOS 18, much like last year when iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X became incompatible with iOS 17. This trend leaves certain users without access to new features, but many older devices will still receive substantial updates. One example is the upcoming software update for AirPods Pro, transforming them into hearing aids after recent FDA approval.
iPhones Compatible with iPhone Software Update IOS 18
If your iPhone was compatible with iOS 17, chances are you’ll also be able to run iPhone Software Update IOS 18. Here’s a list of supported devices:
- iPhone SE (2nd gen or later)
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS / XS Max
- iPhone 11 / 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 / 12 mini / 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max

- iPhone 14 / 14 Plus / 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max

Unfortunately, users of iPhone 8 or iPhone X from 2017 or earlier won’t be able to upgrade to iPhone Software Update IOS 18, although their devices will still function without access to the latest features.
Apple Intelligence and Future Updates
One of the most anticipated features in iPhone Software Update IOS 18 is “Apple Intelligence,” though it will be limited to newer models, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. These features are set to roll out in phases starting in October, with localized support in various regions by December. Unfortunately, European users will have to wait, as regulatory issues have delayed the launch.
