The Additional Chief Secretary of South Punjab, Fuad Hashim Rabbani, inaugurated the region’s first AI based traffic control system on Old Bahawalpur Road. The cutting-edge system, which utilizes artificial intelligence to monitor and manage traffic, is seen as a milestone in modernizing traffic management in South Punjab. This pilot project aims to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow by employing AI technology to track vehicle speeds and enforce regulations.
High-ranking officials, including Director General MDA Rana Saleem Ahmed Khan, Director Engineering Rana Waseem, and Director Transport Rao Zaka, were present at the inauguration. Addressing the gathering, Additional Chief Secretary Fuad Hashim Rabbani emphasized the significance of integrating advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, into public infrastructure.
He stated, “The AI-based traffic control system marks a crucial step toward adopting smart solutions for better road management. Without embracing modern technologies, our progress across various sectors will stagnate.”
Fuad Hashim Rabbani further highlighted that the practical application of artificial intelligence has already commenced in several sectors across South Punjab. Following the successful trial of the AI system on Old Bahawalpur Road, plans are underway to expand the AI-based traffic control system to other major roads. Along with this, public awareness campaigns focusing on road safety and responsible driving practices will be launched to support the new system.
During a briefing, MDA Director General Rana Saleem Ahmed Khan explained how the system operates. The AI radar monitors vehicle speeds in real-time, displaying speeds in green for vehicles within the limit and in red for those exceeding it. The system operates 24/7, powered by solar energy and equipped with a backup to ensure uninterrupted operation.
