PTA spokesperson Malahat Obaid acknowledged the disruptions but maintained that they are likely due to a technical glitch. She refrained from providing further details about the nature of the glitch or its resolution timeline.
Adding to the speculation,Usama Khilji, director of the digital rights suggested that the disruptions might be connected to the recent installation of a government-imposed firewall aimed at increasing control over internet and communication technologies.Usama Khilji criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the firewall, calling it “criminal.”
The PTA, along with telecommunications companies, is actively investigating the situation to restore seamless service to WhatsApp users. With 52.3 million WhatsApp users in Pakistan, according to the World Population Review, the resolution of these issues is of significant concern to a large portion of the population.
