Pakistan Now Issues Only e-Passports (October 2026)
Pakistan has stopped issuing machine-readable passports (MRPs) and now issues only e-passports at passport offices in Pakistan and at Pakistani missions abroad. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports first announced the change for 15 October 2026. ARY News reported on 22 October 2026 that the start was moved to 23 October 2026, and PhoneWorld reported that MRPs were issued until 22 October.
- If you already hold an MRP, you do not need to replace it now. It stays valid until the expiry date printed on it, according to Gulf News.
- When your MRP expires, your next passport will be an e-passport.
- New applicants now pay the e-passport fees shown above.
What Is an e-Passport?
An e-passport has an electronic chip with a contactless (NFC) interface that stores the holder’s biometric data, the personal details printed on the data page, and a digital signature. DGIP says it meets ICAO international standards and lets holders use e-Gates at airports that offer them. See the official DGIP e-passport page.

DGIP says courier time is not included for remote areas of Pakistan and for Pakistani missions abroad. If you gave your mobile number or email when your data was entered, DGIP sends status updates by SMS or email from 9988.
How to Apply for an e-Passport in Pakistan
- Visit a passport office with your documents. You can apply at any passport office, whatever address is on your CNIC (Passport Rules 2021, Rule 6).
- Get your photograph taken and receive a token with a QR code at the customer service counter.
- Give your fingerprints (biometrics).
- Staff enter your data. Check your name and details carefully at this stage.
- Your record is checked against the Exit Control List and Black List.
- An Assistant Director interviews you and decides on the application.
- Pay the fee using the QR code.
- Collect your passport, or receive it through the courier, as directed.

Name rules: a first name and last name are both required. The first name can be up to 50 characters, the last name up to 40 characters, and the father, husband, or guardian name up to 40 characters.
Documents Required for an e-Passport
Adults (18 and above)
- Original valid CNIC or NICOP, with a photocopy
- Your previous passport in original, with a photocopy, if you had one
- A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your department, if you work for the government, a semi-government body or an autonomous body
- Your foreign passport with a photocopy, if you are a dual national
- A police report that mentions your previous passport number, if your passport was lost
Children under 18
- Aged 10 and above: an original updated Child Registration Certificate (CRC) with fingerprints and photograph, or a NADRA Juvenile Card, with one photocopy
- Under 10: an original CRC (Form B) or a Family Registration Certificate, with one photocopy
- Original valid CNICs or passports of both parents, with photocopies
- The child must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian appointed by a court
- If the parents are separated or divorced: custody papers from the court, and the other parent’s consent (in person or on attested non-judicial stamp paper)
- If a parent has died: the original death certificate with a photocopy
Every applicant, including a child, needs a separate passport. Children cannot be added to a parent’s passport. DGIP may ask for extra documents if there is any doubt about identity or nationality.
Lost, Damaged and Other Passport Fees
- First-time loss: DGIP charges double the passport fee.
- Second-time loss: DGIP charges four times the passport fee.
- Renewal: you can renew before your passport expires. DGIP may ask for a statement explaining why you need a new passport early.
- Exhausted pages or a damaged passport: you can apply for a new passport and pay the fee for the page size you choose.
Passport Office Timings and Helpline
- Most passport offices are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with a break from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm. They are closed on public holidays.
