Punjab Govt May Lift X Ban if Authorities Finalize Social Media Regulations

Minister Azma Bokhari has announced that Punjab Govt May Lift X Ban, as authorities consider leveraging social media implementation to address the underlying issues.

Addressing by journalists, Ms. Azma Bokhari clarified, “We are not against social media, but we are advocating for rules and regulations. If these rules are implemented, the ban on X will be lifted.”

The Shehbaz Sharif government imposed the ban on X in February 2024, following accusations by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding manipulation of general election results. The federal government justified the ban as a necessary measure for national security.

Ms. Azma Bokhari emphasized that many countries have laws governing social media. “In every country, laws are made to address issues and prevent the abuse of freedom of expression. Our society has distorted traditions, she stated, adding that social media accounts are regulated worldwide”.

Highlighting the issue of digital terrorism, the minister stressed, all social media accounts must adhere to rules and regulations.

Regarding the PTI’s incarcerated founder, Ms. Azma Bokhari said, Imran Khan is mentally disturbed in jail. He is inconsistent, calling for army representatives in talks with PTI and simultaneously claiming Mohsin Naqvi as the army’s representative.

She further added, Imran Khan should first apologize for the May 9 incidents. He needs to admit his mistakes before any progress can be made.
